Kelly Lew, a junior at Stanley-Boyd, delivered a standout performance on the softball field this season, and her combination of leadership and athleticism has earned her the title of Athlete of the Week. With a mix of focus, hitting power, and base-running speed, she proved to be an essential asset to the Orioles. Lew, who started playing softball at the age of eight, brings both passion and a team-focused approach to the game. “My favorite part of playing softball is that everyone has to work as a team to win—one person can’t do it all,” she said. That team mentality is reflected in every part of her game.
As the team’s leadoff batter, Lew set the tone offensively. She bat an impressive .486 with five home runs, 14 RBIs, and a team-leading 23 stolen bases. “She wants to be the one up to bat with the game on the line or wants the ball to come to her,” said Head Coach Kim Goettl. “Her aggression is so fun to watch on the bases too.”
But Goettl mentions that Lew’s impact went far beyond the stat sheet. “Aside from her outstanding physical contributions, her attitude and focus on the team makes her special.” When a teammate was injured, Lew stepped up to pitch—even though she hadn’t practiced in years—proving she’ll do whatever it takes for the team. “She is willing to do whatever the team needs to win. That also includes sharing trauma stories and creating new ones, such as getting beamed in the chest by a teammate. She is one of our most vocal leaders, and if I am ever at a loss for words, she is there to fill in,” said Goettl.
One of Lew’s favorite softball memories came earlier this season when she hit two home runs in a single game. Now that the season has come to a close, Lew looks back on it with pride and gratitude. She shared that her goals were to make a deep playoff run and to “make the most memories possible”—and she certainly accomplished both. With her drive, heart, and standout performance, Kelly Lew was a key force behind the Orioles’ success this season.
