Stanley-Boyd High School sophomore Lucy Wundrow has been making her mark on the cross-country course this fall. Wundrow’s been part of the program for years — “I started Cross Country in 7th grade,” she said — and her dedication is showing in her results.
At the Neillsville Cross Country Meet at Levis Mound trails, Wundrow turned in one of her strongest performances yet. Head Coach Nick Mahr noted that Wundrow dropped her season best time by almost 40 seconds. “She finished 8th overall out of over 70 varsity girls with a time of 22:44,” he said. “Her effort helped the girls earn second place out of 13 teams.”
Wundrow says the team environment is one of her favorite aspects of the sport. “My favorite part is definitely being with my teammates because we have a lot of fun together. I also like the competition in races,” she shared. That balance of camaraderie and competition has been a big motivator for her since she first laced up her running shoes.
Off the course, Wundrow is just as engaged. She’s active in her classes and enjoys learning about the past. “My favorite subject in school is History,” she said.
On the course, Wundrow is motivated to keep improving. “This season I am most looking forward to seeing how our high school girls’ team will do throughout the season and how much my personal time can improve. I am also looking forward to spending more time with my teammates,” she said. As the season continues, Wundrow hopes to keep lowering her times and contributing to the team’s success.
With that attitude — and results like her recent top-ten finish — Wundrow is a standout choice for the Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week. Her determination to push herself while also supporting her teammates reflects the spirit of the Stanley-Boyd program. With her steady improvement and positive outlook, Lucy Wundrow is poised to be an important leader for the Orioles both this year and in the seasons to come.
