Eighth grader Liam Hoel has been selected as this week’s Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week for his grit, growth, and memorable contributions throughout the season. Middle school head coach Sam Goettl highlighted Hoel’s toughness and attitude, noting that “Liam Hoel’s heart for the game was shown with his determination and grit to keep fighting in the 28-44 loss against Cadott.”
Hoel said his favorite play of his middle school football career came this year when “I trucked the Cadott defender.” It was one of several moments that stood out to him from a season filled with challenges and excitement. When asked what he’ll never forget, he shared, “Practices and tackling drills and all of the excitement.”
He also enjoyed the time spent bonding with teammates, noting that “The bus rides to games and the nerves building up to the game” were experiences he’ll always remember.
Hoel first played flag football in third grade and later transitioned to CFYF as a sixth grader. He admitted he was hesitant at first, but the excitement of the game — and his friends — quickly pulled him in. This season, he played slot receiver — a position he learned with the help of supportive coaches.
Family has also played a major role in Hoel’s football journey. He said his love for the game began at home, inspired by “my brother and dad who I always would play catch and run routes in the yard with.”
With his steady dedication, love for the game, and strong support system behind him, Hoel closes his middle school career as a deserving Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week whose dedication will serve him well in future seasons.
