Hard work and persistence have paid off this season for Stanley-Boyd wrestler Blake Peterson, who has shown major growth on the mat in just his second year in the sport.
Peterson first joined wrestling only last year, encouraged to give it a try by a teacher at Stanley-Boyd school.
“I started wrestling last year when my English teacher Mr. Thompson said I should go out for it,” he shared.
Like many first-year wrestlers, the learning curve was steep. Early losses tested his confidence, but he credits perseverance for helping him turn a corner this season.
“The challenges I faced were mostly last year when I was first learning how to wrestle, and I didn’t win many matches. I overcame it by just sticking with the sport and I’ve ended up doing a lot better this year,” he said.
One moment that stands out most came in a redemption matchup that showed just how far he’s come.
“The match that stands out the most to me is my redemption match against a wrestler from Neillsville. I previously received a decision loss (8-4) against him, and then I wrestled him again and pulled off a decision win.”
As the season winds down, Peterson is keeping his goals simple, and focused.
“My main goal I’m working towards as the season is coming to an end is to just win as many matches as possible when reasonable. I’ll do that by mostly listening to my coaches and staying in good positions during those matches.”
Behind his progress is a strong support system, both at home and on the wrestling mat.
“The people that have supported me most are my parents who have showed up to every single match I’ve had this year. I also of course have been inspired by my coaches considering that they’ve taught me everything I know about wrestling, and coach me through my matches.”
Peterson’s effort hasn’t gone unnoticed by the coaching staff either. Head coach Jake Fitzsimmons praised his impact on the team, calling him an “extremely hard worker and awesome teammate.”
With his rapid improvement and positive attitude, sophomore Blake Peterson has become an important part of the wrestling program at Stanley-Boyd High School — and is a clear example of what hard work and dedication can accomplish in a short time.
