Junior Charlie Hoel has been a force in the post for the Stanley-Boyd boys varsity basketball team this season, earning him First Team All-Conference honors and this week’s Athlete of the Week recognition.
Hoel’s basketball journey began at a young age. He started playing around second grade and says his interest in the sport came from being around it at home, as his mom played basketball and his siblings were involved in the game as well.
Since those early days, Hoel has remained a consistent presence near the basket, playing center and power forward and using his height to his advantage as a post player for the Orioles.
“I have been tall my whole life and have always been in the post,” he said.
Hoel says one of his favorite memories in the Stanley-Boyd basketball program came during his freshman season, when he had the opportunity to play alongside his brother.
“Probably my freshman year, being able to play with my brother on the same team.”
Hoel also credits his mom for being one of the biggest influences throughout his basketball journey.
“Definitely my mom. She never forced us into the sport but always encouraged us,” he shared.
This season has included plenty of memorable moments, but one game in particular stands out for Hoel. “My favorite moment this year was when we beat Regis the second time. That was an awesome game to play in and be a part of,” he said.
Hoel’s leadership has also been noticed by the coaching staff. Head coach Dakota Nichols praised his impact on the team.
“Charlie has emerged as a leader of our team, setting the standard through his commitment, work ethic, and accountability. He consistently pushes his teammates to be better, holding everyone—including himself—to a high level of performance. Charlie leads by example, both in competition and preparation, and his encouragement brings out the best in those around him. His leadership has played a key role in shaping the culture and success of our team.”
With his continued leadership and recent recognition as a First Team All-Conference player, Charlie Hoel has been a cornerstone of the Stanley-Boyd High School boys basketball team. As a junior, he provides both experience and consistency, helping guide the Orioles through a successful season and setting a strong example for his teammates.
