This week’s Athlete of the Week spotlight shines on freshman Alaina Nitz of the Stanley-Boyd girls basketball team. Nitz has made a strong impact in her first varsity season, recently moving into the starting lineup and contributing in a big way for the Orioles.
Nitz first became interested in basketball a few years ago, influenced by both family and friends.
“I first started playing basketball in fifth grade. What first got me interested in the sport was that my mom had played and many of my friends were playing,” she explained.
Nitz has continued to develop her game over the years, gaining experience in multiple roles on the court. “The positions I usually play are guard and post, which have mainly stayed the same over the years.”
One highlight for Nitz in the Stanley-Boyd basketball program came during this season’s playoff run. She shared, “One of my favorite memories playing basketball for the Orioles is winning the first two rounds of playoffs this season.”
Another standout moment came in the postseason when the Orioles earned a big win against Hayward, Wisconsin, as Nitz recorded her first double-double with 16 points and 20 rebounds.
“My favorite basketball game from this basketball season was when we beat Hayward in the second round of playoffs.”
Nitz credits her mom, Karyn Nitz, as the person who has inspired and supported her the most throughout her basketball journey. Along with encouraging her at home, she has also had the opportunity to learn from her on the court at Stanley-Boyd High School, where her mom serves on the coaching staff.
“She pushes and encourages me to be the best I can be, and she is someone I always look up to,” Nitz said.
Her growth this season has been noticed by the coaching staff as well. Head coach Ryan Wundrow highlighted the strong numbers Nitz has put up this season.
“Alaina Nitz has really played well since moving into the starting lineup. She has average 11 pts and 9 rebounds a game. Those are really great number for a freshman in one of the toughest conferences in the state. She plays fearless and tough.”
JV Coach Karyn Nitz praised the freshman’s versatility and effort on the court.
“Coming in as a freshman starter, Alaina has shown significant growth on the court. She is a key player to have underneath as a post player but yet also can shift out to play a guard position bringing the ball down the court. She is a great team player, works hard to improve her own skills and her team as well.” She adds, “Last few games she has contributed many points to the team along with her many rebounds. She also sees the court well, often creating advantages in our offense, either by finding an advantage driving in herself to the basket or dishing to her teammates for assists. Glad to have her on the team!”
In addition to basketball, Nitz stays active in other sports at Stanley-Boyd High School, where she is also involved in softball and volleyball. With a strong freshman season already under her belt, Alaina Nitz has quickly established herself as an important piece of the Orioles’ lineup and a promising player for the future. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see what she accomplishes next.
