This week’s Athlete of the Week spotlight shines on Bethany Henderson, a Stanley-Boyd Middle School student and accomplished gymnast whose passion for the sport has led to impressive success.
Henderson’s journey in gymnastics began early. “I took classes when I was three. Then I took a break for a while and I started again about 6 years ago,” she said. She credits her sister as a major source of inspiration: “My sister Marie inspired me to join because she was in gymnastics when she was younger.”
Now a well-rounded competitor, Henderson participates in all four major events—vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise—as well as the all-around competition. Among them, she has a clear favorite: “I enjoy the uneven bars the most.”
This season has marked a major step forward in her career. “My most memorable moment this season was learning I was going to compete level 7 this year. Last year I competed in level 5,” Henderson shared, highlighting her quick progression in the sport.
Like any athlete, she has faced challenges along the way. “One of the biggest challenges I faced this year was qualifying for regionals after getting a low score on the uneven bars,” she said. However, Henderson showed resilience and determination in overcoming that setback. “I overcame it, because I got some of my best scores of the season on the other events.”
Looking ahead, Henderson has ambitious goals. “My personal goal for gymnastics is to get to compete in college gymnastics,” she said.
She also recognizes the strong support system behind her success. “My coaches and parents have had the biggest impact on me because they have always encouraged me to do more, and to try new things,” she shared adding that her teammates play a key role as well. “I enjoy having my teammates support and them cheering me on. They are always telling me to try again and that I got it.”
Henderson’s hard work has already earned her significant recognition. Among her achievements, she was named the 2024 USAG All-Around State Champion for her age group and captured four gold medals at the 2025 AAU Junior Olympics. Beyond the medals, one of her favorite parts of gymnastics is the opportunity to travel. She has competed across Wisconsin and in several states, including Minnesota, Iowa, Florida, Nevada, Texas, and California.
With her talent and determination, Bethany Henderson continues to rise in the gymnastics world, making her a well-deserving Athlete of the Week. With a bright future ahead of her, she is poised to keep achieving great things both in competition and beyond.
