A junior at Stanley-Boyd High School, Ella Nitz has made a significant impact on the Orioles girls softball team, not only with her skills on the field but also with her uplifting presence off of it.
Nitz is tireless in her pursuit of excellence, with personal goals that reflect her dedication to both herself and her teammates. “My personal goals for the rest of this season are to give 100% to myself and my teammates going into playoffs,” she explained. “Also being a good encouraging teammate.”
Nitz’s love for softball began early, when she first picked up a bat in kindergarten. Inspired by her family, especially her mother and older cousins who played the sport, Nitz found herself drawn to the thrill of competition. “What I enjoy most about playing softball is the team atmosphere,” she shared. “Our team has so much fun together; it’s like we are a big family. Everyone is very close, and we always pick each other up when needed.” This family-like bond became even stronger this season when the team celebrated a remarkable victory together: “My favorite softball memory is definitely winning the conference championship against McDonnell this year.”
However, Nitz's journey hasn’t been without its challenges. After suffering an ACL injury that sidelined her for an entire year, she emerged with a renewed determination. Head softball coach Kim Goettl recognized the growth and influence Nitz has had on the team since her return. “Ella is a Junior 1st baseman and pitcher for us. She had to endure what no athlete wants: an ACL injury that sat her for a year. Last year she was a positive personality for the team. This year she plays a vital role as co-1st baseman, starting in the batting line-up and back-up pitcher,” Goettl remarked.
What sets Nitz apart, according to her coach, is her commitment to the team's success above all. “Most kids would have a difficult time with not having a set role. Ella is special; she truly puts the team first with all her passion, cheering, and microphone singing on the bus.”
Goettl continues, “As a coach she is exactly what you hope for from your players. She doesn't simply hope for the best she puts in the work. She has dedicated countless hours out of season to her game and is always staying late after practice and on the weekends during season. She is a great kid, and the Orioles are honored to have her on our team!”
Nitz credits much of her success to her family, who have played a pivotal role in shaping her into the athlete she is today. “My family has definitely inspired me the most during my softball career so far. Specifically, my grandpa and my mom always giving me tips on what things to fix after games.”
As the season progresses, Nitz looks toward her future with ambition. After graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in veterinary science. But for now, her focus remains on maximizing her performance and strengthening the bond with her teammates as they head into the playoffs.
With her heart set on both her athletic and academic aspirations, Nitz proves that true dedication and a positive attitude can lead to not just personal achievements but a lasting legacy of teamwork and friendship. As the playoffs continue, one thing is certain: Ella Nitz will undoubtedly shine brightly as her team embarks on their next adventure on the field.
