The Stanley-Boyd Orioles girls varsity softball team has had an amazing season so far, marked by strong performances and standout moments. Leading the charge is this week’s Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week, Dannea Wundrow—a player whose dedication, and leadership have made her a driving force on and off the field.
In a season already full of exciting moments, one play stands out as a defining memory for Wundrow. She launched a home run over the scoreboard at Oriole Park during their first game of the season—a moment she says she’ll never forget.
“Hearing the crowd cheering and so excited was awesome!” she said. “It’s definitely my favorite softball memory so far.”
Wundrow’s love for softball began early—she picked up the game at just five years old. From the very beginning, it was the competitive nature of the sport and the bond with her teammates that drew her in. Now a leader on the Stanley-Boyd squad, those same qualities continue to fuel her success.
“I have always had a passion for the competitiveness of the game, friendships with teammates, and seeing how far I can push my skills as a player,” she said.
That passion and drive have become the hallmark of her playing style. Whether she’s traveling with her team, building new friendships, or stepping onto the field on game day, Wundrow thrives on the energy of the sport.
“My favorite part of playing softball is being with my teammates, traveling, meeting new people, and the exciting, butterfly feeling on game day,” she added.
As the season progresses, Wundrow remains focused and goal driven. She’s not only working to improve her own performance at the plate but is equally committed to lifting up her teammates.
“My goals for the rest of this season are to continue making solid contact with the ball, cheering on my teammates, and continuing to work hard, one game at a time, through playoffs,” she said.
Her dedication hasn't gone unnoticed by those around her. Head coach Kim Goettl had high praise for Wundrow.
“She is everything a coach wants in a player,” Goettl said. “She shows up early, willing to stay late, comes prepared, and is truly a team player. Anything I ask of her, her response is always ‘okay’ or ‘yes ma’am.’”
Goettl also highlighted Wundrow’s versatility and work ethic, noting how she’s embraced different roles throughout the season without hesitation.
“I have had her play a variety of positions and she always gives her best. Her work is paying off as she is our number four batter and is leading our stats with an impressive .515 batting average.”
With that kind of commitment and talent, it’s no wonder Dannea Wundrow is this week’s Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week. As the team heads into the final stretch of the season, one thing is clear: Wundrow’s dedication is helping to drive the Orioles forward, one game at a time.
