COVID-forfeit sends Orioles to Cumberland

Stanley-Boyd was left scrambling for a football game Friday night, as the Colby Hornets were forced by COVID-19 cases to pull out of their Level 1 playoff matchup with the Orioles.

Stanley-Boyd now advances to play undefeated Cumberland Thursday night in Level 2 the final game this year – as the WIAA limited playoffs to just two weeks as a result of the pandemic and the late start to the season.

The game at Cumberland is at 7 p.m.

The Orioles arranged a game at Marshfield and played the bigger school strong, falling 28-13. The loss didn’t force the end of the Oriole postseason, as both schools move on in the playoffs with opponents backing out. Marshfield was supposed to be playing at Menomonie and advances to play at Hudson.

In was Marshfield’s first win of the season, as its sophomore quarterback, Trevor Foemmel, threw four touchdown passes.

The Orioles scored first in the game as Cooper Nichols ran for a touchdown with Mike Karlen connecting on the extra point at the end of the first quarter.

Marshfield led 8-7 at halftime and scored on its first drive of the second quarter.

The Orioles kept the game close on a huge pass play from quarterback Carsen Hause to Nichols for an 82-yard touchdown. The twopoint conversion failed, and Marshfield led 15-13.

Marshfield closed out the game with two more scores.
