Several runners make All Conference
The Oriole varsity cross country team headed to Whispering Pines at Cadott for the Sectional Oct. 22, coming just one spot short of state on both the boys and girls teams.
“They gave it everything they had,” Steenport said. "We had the first person not to make it to State for both girls and boys,” he said of the finish. "And that kind of hurts a bit. But they gave it their best, they emptied the tank and that’s kind of what you have to do. It’s part of the race and what you have to do.”
Coming in for the boys at Whispering Pines, junior Zach Haas came away with a time of 18:06.7 for seventh place, while junior Breckin Burzynski was just behind with a time of 18:13.6 for eighth, beating out runners from Spring Valley and Unity with a finish line dash.
Coming in next for the Oriole boys varsity was junior Lukas Milas in 58th place with a time of 20:32.0, while sophomore Candin Yeager made a time of 21:08.3 for 73rd. Senior Nic Schmelzer came in with a time of 21:17.7 for 78th place, while senior Dale Sayles took home a time of 21:37.6 for 86th place. Junior Vaughn Schneider took a time of 22:51.3 for 99th.
As to the girls, senior Janelle Schesel took 11th place with a time of 21:38.0. while Adyson Gustafson took 34th with a time of 23:20.1. Alexa Liszewki took 53rd with a time of 24:18.7, while Jennifer Boyea took 97th with a time of 29:37.9.
Now that the season is over, what might the Cross Country runners do?
"Get some off season miles in is pretty much all we can do at this point,” Steenport said of the present, with training for next year to hopefully obtain a different outcome.
