The Stanley-Boyd cross country team competed in the WIAA Division 3 Sectional meet on Saturday, October 23. Despite many runners running their personal and season bests, no runners advanced to this year’s state meet. To advance the runners had to either be on the top two finishing teams or be one of the five fastest individuals not on those teams. The boys team’s best hope lay in Zach Haas. Haas was running in 10th place for much of the race. “Knowing he needed to move up if he wanted to qualify, Zach tried to catch the runners in front of him and emptied his gas tank a little too early. He didn’t have his best time because of this, but I’d rather have him try and make it into the top 5 and come up short trying, than to run conservatively and have a better finishing time.” Coach Mahr commented. Haas ended up finishing in 14th place.
Janelle Schesel finished 8th in the girls race. There was only one girl in front of her that was on a qualifying team, however, so it was not enough to get her through to the state meet. “As odd as it might sound as a Stanley-Boyd coach, I was hoping Regis would qualify as a team. If they did then two of the finishers ahead of Janelle would have gone with their team and Janelle would slide into the fifth individual spot. It didn’t work out that way though.” Coach Mahr explained.
Outside of the top finishers in each gender, eight other runners raced in the Sectional meet. Six of those runners had their season and lifetime personal best times.
“It’s time to reflect on the season and plan for next year. Our boys were 5th out of 22 teams. That is a good place for us this year, but if we want to qualify as a team we have to find a way to shave 100 points off our team score. I think we can do it, but we will need 5 or more dedicated boys to make it happen. The girls should have a complete team next year. If we do that, it will be the first complete girls team since I started coaching here. That’s exciting as well. We will talk as a team about individual and team goals and how we can keep getting better. That’s what this sport is all about.” Coach Mahr reflected.
