The Stanley Lions held their monthly meeting on July 14 at Debbie’s on Broadway, with Lion President Laurie Foster presiding. A review by Watermelon Festival Chairs indicates all is in order for this year’s Festival to be held on Sunday, July 27. It was also announced that the Stanley Sportsman Club will be at this year’s festival giving out free ice cream cones inside the park pavilion they recently enclosed. As usual, the Lions will begin distributing free sliced watermelon at 11 a.m. Any community member who would like to donate a cake for the Cake Walk can deliver it to Lion Jerry Dirkes’ stand the day of the event.
Among other items discussed was the future of the Stanley Lions Club, since a good number of the members are older. New blood and younger members are needed to join in order that the community continue to benefit from the support the Lions have been giving to community betterment efforts for over 75 years. It was agreed to establish a 2030 Committee and volunteers were obtained to serve. Lion President Foster noted that July is Diabetes Awareness Month and she plans to have educational pamphlets available at the Watermelon Festival. The Lions support the purchasing of eyeglasses, especially for kids needing them, indicated that the program is in place to help those in need. Looking ahead on August 8, the Lions will have a Brat Sale at Hansen’s IGA and on Sunday, September 21, the Lions will again assist with the Concertina Extravaganza to be held at the Stanley Community Building, at Chapman Park, with proceeds going to support of the Library Project. .
The Lions next meeting will be held on August 10, at the Stanley Community Center with non-Lions who helped at the Watermelon Festival being invited guests. Before adjourning, Lion Wayne Hove’s name was drawn as the attendance winner. He was not present to collect his winnings.
