From growth to victory: a memorable season for Seventh and Eighth Grade Oriole Girls Basketball

The Seventh grade basketball season was a time for growth, teamwork, and fun. Ten girls committed their time and energy to the sport. Most had never played on an organized basketball team before. This lack of experience was shadowed by the girl’s hustle and willingness to work hard. I am so proud how they came together as a team and clearly improved their basketball skills. Though the improvement was notable, the sense of team and their ability to work together made the season a success.
Eighth grade girls had a great season. We had a strong team of 13 girls. We played 12 season games and went 10-2 on the season losing to the same team twice. We played teams from Cadott, Greenwood, Colby, Owen-Withee, Thorp, Loyal, Gilman, Spencer and McDonell. I had so much fun coaching these girls. They work hard both on offense and defense and have love for the game which makes playing so much fun for them. They are often found laughing together and having a good time but able to settle in when they need to. We have played a man to man defense the whole season where I am so proud of them for working together as a team to stop some skilled players. Our team is strong on taking the ball to the hoop, this year they have really advanced on our outside game. Our last game of the season, we were able to hit seven 3-pointers from the outside which is impressive for an Eighth grade team.
Our middle school season is now done, however nine of the girls are going to continue playing in the GNBL. (Great Northwest Basketball League) We have played in three tournaments so far with tough competition, often higher division level teams. We have one tournament scheduled in Cameron in March. The girls are thrilled to be invited to play in the WISCONSIN STATE INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT at the end of March in Stevens Point. GO ORIOLES!
