Coming off a week that saw them win an away at Elmwood/Plum City after a string of losses, the Orioles Girls varsity added to the win column, coming away 41 – 19 against Loyal on Tuesday and following this up with a 58 – 29 fin ish against Flambeau on Thursday of the same week. As to what led to the double win, Coach Alison Becker had this to say, in part.

“The girls played great defense,” she said. “They were fundamentally solid and were able to help each other in all areas on the defensive end of the floor.

Doubling down on the defense emphasis, Coach Becker went on to say that, “It really started on the defensive end of the floor. Getting stops, steals, and rebounds enabled us to push the ball and have our defense create our offense. At half time, we talked about how we have been in this position several times before (being up by double digits at half time and losing) and how we needed to score the first two points of the second half. Our seniors did a fabulous job leading the second half and kept the energy up for our team.”

Starting out Tuesday against Loyal with a five-point deficit, the Oriole girls were able to turn things around after two free throws by Licht brought the score 5 – 2 Loyal, with further scoring leading to a shift in the balance, to 9 -7 Stanley-Boyd.

“All of the girls played their roles perfectly,” Coach Becker said. "Our guards were confident and shot the ball well, everyone made good passes that benefited their teammates, and our team captains and seniors lead the team with confidence and poise."
