Win two, lose one. That’s the return from last week in Oriole varsity softball.
Facing Regis in a double header April 30, the Orioles came away with a double win, the first game ending 12 -2 while the second finished 15 - 2.
Heading to Casper Field at Chippewa Falls May 3, meanwhile they fell to McDonell, their season record now 7-8 overall. Orioles head coach Andrea Mahr shared more after the results were in.
“We put together a solid night on Tuesday against Regis,” she said. “We had a double header and in game one we had 12 runs and 13 hits. Nevaeh Walters went 3 for 4 with two doubles and 5 RBIs. Ava Prahl went 2/4 with 2 RBIs. Abby Reynolds pitched a solid game, only allowing 4 hits and giving up 1 walk.”
As for game two against Regis, Mahr said the team came back making hits at the plate.
“We had another 13 hits and scored 15 runs,” she said. “Kelly Lew went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Ella Nitz only allowed 3 hits and had 6 strike outs on only 24 plate appearances.” With confidence at the batting box, the Orioles came to play.
“We had confidence at the plate and it was great to get another two wins under our belt making our record 7-7 going into the game against McDonell,” she said.
Playing at Chippewa Falls May 3, Mahr said McDonell came on hard.
“McDonell came out of the gate hitting hard,” she said. “We switched pitchers and that helped for the 2nd and third inning. McDonell earned a few runs at a time, eventually ending in them with a win. We only had three hits. Their pitcher had a great night. She had a tough rise ball. We had 8 strike outs - which is hard to recover from when the other team is hitting hard.”
Among the game highlights per Mahr were Nevaeh Walters finding a way to base at every bat she had, while Abby Reynolds had a nice single and also got on base at each batting opportunity.
“In the end, throwing errors helped McDonell capitalize.” Coach Mahr said. “We had a few innings where taking care of the ball wasn’t happening consistently. However, with that said, I do feel we played much better against them this time than the first time we played them. So improvement did happen.”
The Orioles next play Osseo-Fairchild at Osseo-Fairchild Thursday May 9. Game start is 5:00 p.m.
