Off to a start at least. That’s the story for Oriole golf after weather delays earlier this month.

Playing four varsity matches at Hickory Hills, Whitetail, Whispering Pines, and Bloomer, the Orioles took two points each for division standings at Whitetail and Whispering Pines, with Isaac Brenner getting the best individual score for the Orioles at Hickory Hills, coming away with a 40 after 9 holes. Orioles Head coach Devon Wenndt shared some of what’s been happening as the season finally begins.

“We finally got our season kicked off last week with four varsity matches,” he said. “It's been a rough start to the season with regards to the weather for all of us in this part of the state. All we can do is make the best of it.  I'm seeing mostly what I expect to see at the start of the season after a long stretch of practicing indoors.. Ball striking is further along than short game and putting at this point.  This makes sense to me, as this is mainly what we are able to do the most work on when we were inside.

As to disappointing aspects, a lack of play opportunities for JV was on Wenndt’s list.

“I think the most disappointing aspect of this season so far is that JV has only been able to play one match as of this writing,” Wenndt shared via email. “It has been tough to determine who our five best players are with such limited playing opportunities.  Hopefully they have no more cancellations and/or scheduling conflicts moving forward.  I know they are as eager to get out on to the golf course as everybody else is.”

Check back next week for more varsity golf news and results, with Stanley Boyd scheduled to play an invitational at North Bay Golf Course on Thursday May 4, starting at 9 a.m.
