Two Stanley-Boyd athletes were honored at the recent Cloverbelt Scholar Athlete banquet Wednesday, April 15 at Regis High School in Eau Claire. Gunnar Goettl and Lula Chwala were among the 33 athletes honored from across the Cloverbelt.
Cloverbelt scholar athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, with participation in athletic and academic leadership weighed in the selection process. Scholar athletes are seniors, with juniors considered if there are no senior candidates. Athlete names for nomination are submitted upon request to the principal of the school hosting the event.
Oriole boys varsity head football coach Brody Mahr shared more on Goettl.
“Gunnar is very deserving of being named a Cloverbelt Scholar Athlete. He’s the kind of kid you’re proud to have in your program. He works hard, handles himself the right way, and does a great job representing Stanley-Boyd in the classroom, in athletics, and around other people.
“What stands out about Gunnar is that he’s dependable, respectful, and consistent. He shows up, does what’s asked of him, and goes about things the right way. We’re proud of him, and this is a recognition he’s earned.”
Oriole girls varsity head basketball coach Ryan Wundrow shared more on Chwala.
“It was my honor to accompany Lula and her parents Tanya and Ryan to the Cloverbelt Scholar Athletic banquet,” he said. “It was really nice to share one last moment with Lula before she graduates. Lula has committed numerous hours to participating in multiple sports but on top of that she has excellent grades. It’s not very easy juggling all of those commitments on top of working at a local horse barn but Lula does it all with smile on her face. She is never afraid to work hard and give her best effort. It shows up on the court and in the classroom. Her leadership and tenacity really helped the basketball team finish strong and accomplish some feats that haven’t happened for a girl’s basketball team very often. She solidified her legacy by receiving this very distinguished award. Congratulations Lula!
“As a bonus I was able to see Gunnar Goettl receive this award as well. I had the privilege of coaching Gunnar in football. He worked so hard over his four years and when his opportunity came he made the most of it. Thank you to Lula, Gunnar, and their parents for all the time and dedication to our Oriole athletics programs and our school. You will definitely be missed but never forgotten.”
