The Stanley Area Historical Society will be holding their Quarterly Meeting on Monday, April 22, beginning at 7 p.m. The organizations newest publication, “Vintage Views of Stanley Wisconsin Brought to Life with Color,” will go on sale that evening beginning at 6 p.m. at the museum, located at 228 Helgerson Street in Stanley. The 160 page, nearly full color book, was compiled by historical society member David Plummer, in collaboration with society members Dave Jankoski and Betty Plombon, who assisted with research support. Michelle (Plummer) Halterman provided the copy editing. Cost of the publication will be $35 for a softcover and $45 for a hardcover. Only softcover books will be available at the meeting. Hardcover books have not be printed yet and orders will be taken. After a short business meeting beginning at 7 p.m., Dave Plummer will introduce the book and explain the work that went into the publication. He and Dave Jankoski will then go through the book and point out never before seen photographs and features seen in some of the photographs, that were not as evident before.
The book provides an extraordinary pictorial journey of Stanley history from the 1890’s to the 1950’s. Over 200 black and white vintage photographs have been reconstructed in true, vibrant color. The colorization process, while not eliminating all the original blurriness, does increase sharpness, bringing out unseen features with some amazing detail seen. Historic commentary adds to the meaning and location of many of the pictures featured.
The photos, brought to life with color, would have been the way our ancestors saw the scenery and the reader can imagine their ancestors walking those same streets and seeing them the way they can be viewed in this book.
Books will also be for sale during the museum’s open hours, 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning the weekend of June 8, July, August and September. Books can be mailed at an additional cost of $10.00 per book. Orders can be sent to SAHS, PO Box 142, Stanley, WI 54768.
