20 Years Ago December 21,2000 As I See It! By JOE This week we are very happy to welcome Dorothy Ruff as our correspondent for the Boyd area. Please remember to abide by the hours she sets for taking news. She is not like those of us who are working full time on the paper and are on call 24 hours a day. She is a correspondent, and the job is part-time with hours that work into her schedule.
To get your news in the paper, Dorothy can be reached at 667-****.
Thinking of correspondents, we would sure like to find a new correspondent for some of our rural areas. Mrs. Nerdrum is unable to continue as our Eidsvold correspondent, and we have been unable to replace Mrs. Miller as the Worden correspondent.
Over the years we have had correspondents in many of our rural area. We sure would like to get back to having some again. Besides Eidsvold and Worden, we would like to have a correspondent for Sunset Homes, Maple Hill, Junction, Worden/ West Worden, Otter Lake and Colburn news.
All of those we have had over the past year, but, as we have all gotten older, many of our correspondents have been unable to continue , and no replacement has been found.
This is not a gratis job. There is some pay, based on the number of inches submitted and whether it is typed or written.
If you might be interested in becoming a correspondent for one of the above listed areas, please call Linda (Hakes) at our office and find out the particulars.
Have a good week and a very Merry Christmas !
Engaged…

40 Years Ago December 18,1980 New Children’s Books Available Now At Moon Memorial Library By Terry D. Zier Children’s books are doorways to the land of fantasy, to make believe, to the world of science with its surprises, and some books provide a gentle nudge into reality.
If you haven’t noticed childrens’ books lately you’re bound to be delightfully surprised at the content and the beauty of the illustrations. Writers and illustrators of childrens’ books must inhabit a happy world because the style seems relaxed with an undercurrent of enjoyment of each page. At least that’s all true about some very special books now circulating at Moon Memorial Library.
The book plate tells us these books “were given to Stanley Public Library, by Cheryl Kem-Simerinko in honor of Mabel MacFarlane upon her retirement Sept. 7, 1980.” Mrs. MacFarlane chose the books which were paid for by the gift.
Dr. Simerinko was a library aide and worked with Mrs. MacFarlane for several years and they formed an enduring friendship.

In fall 1633, the villagers of Oberammergau vowed that if their town would be spared from the plague then menacing, they would hold a Passion play every ten years. The plague ended, and the promised Passion Play has been held ever since.
From there it was on to Rome, Naples, and Venice. They visited many worldrenowned art exhibits, but one feels they were very glad to be back in the old USA.

70 Years Ago December 28,1950 Informal public opinion poll of 40 local residents as reported from ‘behind the 8ball,’ The general poll results, anyway, stack up this way: evenly split on the possibility of total war in ’51; largely in favor of continued aid to Europe; slightly opposed to immediate use of A-bomb at the outbreak of war; and overwhelmingly of the belief that we are not doing all we can to secure lasting world peace.

110 Years Ago December 17,1910 OUT OF STEP The People’s Club proposition is based on the principle enunciated 1910 years ago. It is embodied in that heavenly proclamation “Peace on earth good will to men.” The men of this town are abundantly able to support the undertaking in a financial way. It would require sacrifices but he who is not willing to make sacrifices will not go far. There is an awakening to the necessity of cultivating a universal brotherhood among men. Men are awakening to the dangers of class strife, to lines of social division among the people as a result of enforced environment of one sort or another. This movement to neutralize these conditions is taken different forms in other communities. But the social center movement is just now receiving the most attention and it is destined to become a universal movement… Why should not that nmore or less defunct organization known as the Progressive League get together and decide to boost the People’s Club enterprise? It has boosted all things which promised to be of lasting benefit to this city.
