To make a school successful each department has a part, and a vital role of the Stanley-Boyd Area School District is the transportation team, headed by Jake Tiry, Transportation Supervisor at Stanley-Boyd since July 2022. Prior to working at Stanley-Boyd, Jake worked in the transportation industry for seventeen years as the Transportation Director for NFI/DHL as a third-party Fleet Solution for Fleet Farm. He oversaw eighty drivers at four different locations bringing all items into the stores from the warehouse or direct from the supplier to the Fleet Farm store. Before that he was the Transportation Supervisor for Eby-Brown and prior to that he was team lead/manager for the Desoto, Texas terminal for Marten Transport. Jake mentions that he missed home and moved back to Wisconsin where he has lived in Stanley for over twenty years.
Jake lives in Stanley with his son, Storm, a junior who attends Stanley-Boyd High School. “I have a wonderful, ruggedly handsome son named Storm. I adopted him at a young age, and he came with the name, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Together they like to spend time outdoors, canoeing, horseback riding, hunting, and camping. Jake’s favorite sport is football and when he isn’t cheering in support of Storm who is an athlete on the Stanley-Boyd Orioles football, basketball, and baseball teams, he cheers for the Green Bay Packers. Jake explains that his favorite movie is Star Wars, and his favorite food is pizza.
Graduating from Stanley-Boyd High School in 1996, Jake has a hard time choosing just one Stanley-Boyd teacher who influenced him during his time as a student and mentions that they all impacted his life. “I really used them all, I grew up with a sponge of a mind and would and still use everyone’s opinion and then make my best decisions from everyone’s opinion, not just one.”
In 2001, Jake obtained a bachelor’s degree in Land Management with minors in Conservation and GIS from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He shares that if he didn’t work at Stanley-Boyd School his dream job would have been to be a Park Ranger and work in the park system.
Still, he enjoys working at Stanley-Boyd School because he is good at it, and it came easy for him. “I love it here, grew up here, I love coaching, working with kids, making the best better!”
During his time as a student at Stanley-Boyd, Jake participated in many sports including, track, cross-country, and wrestling. Now he shares his knowledge of the sports with the students he has the chance to mentor. Jake is most excited for baseball this year. “We have a group of wonderful young men who are growing up and learning to love the sport of baseball!” He divulges that a baseball team will be starting up in Stanley this summer.
“I’ll be managing and coaching our summer Legion team this summer, that’s right, Stanley-Boyd is having a summer Legion baseball team this summer, so please come out and enjoy some baseball, we’d love to see you there.”
Jake works tirelessly behind the scenes to make the Stanley-Boyd School Transportation Department runs smoothly and describes some of his duties as transportation supervisor. “I am in charge of everything with an engine here at school to make sure it is serviced and running properly, along with licensing and insurance. I also am in charge of our bus and van drivers along with supervising every trip that leaves from the school.”
Jake is proud of his transportation team and the concern and responsibility they have for the students in their care.
“The group I have cares, they care so much about the kids on the bus. They do everything to try to get the kids home safe,” he says.
He explains that the hardest challenge of his job is “having to be flexible, multi-tasking and handling the curveball that gets thrown at you last minute without blinking an eye.” When asked what part of his job he enjoys the most, Jake answers, “The smile on everyone’s face when you say, I got this!”
Students and families of the Stanley-Boyd Area School District are fortunate to have dedicated staff and bus drivers like Jake Tiry and his team who work to keep our students and faculty safe. The Stanley-Boyd community can rest assured that our students are in good hands.
