K9 Trey officially retired from service

K9 Trey is officially retired.
First acquired in 2017 via community fundraising and paired with Officer Tyler Lewien, the now eight year old K9 Officer Trey will live his days out with his handler, the Stanley City Council approving a resolution to transfer K9 Trey to Lewien for $1 on Monday, Dec. 1. The action includes an agreement not to sell Trey as the still healthy canine lives out the remainder of his days with Lewien. The duo have served both Stanley-Boyd and the larger area, with K9 Trey going as far as Eau Claire in an effort to stay busy and working.
“Without the support of the council and community we could never have got this going,” Stanley Police Lance Weiland said of the canine program providing for live suspect apprehension and community protection.
Officer Tyler Lewien wrote the following on the Trey’s retirement:
To the City of Stanley, its citizens, council, mayor and to the citizens of the surrounding communities. After careful thought and prayer, I’ve made the decision to retire K-9 Trey effective November 30th, 2025. This arduous decision feels like the right timing for us both. We would like to thank all the donors, supporters and everyone who contributed to making this program a reality. I would personally like to thank Chief Lance Weiland and Sergeant Adam Kuechenmeister for their tireless support over the years.
K-9 Trey for those that do not know, is a male German Shepherd. He came to us in the summer of 2018 from the Czech Republic. K-9 Trey and I completed a 14-week training program through McDonough K9 in Minnesota. After completion of this training in the fall of 2018, K-9 Trey became certified as a Dual-Purpose Police K-9 through the National Police Canine Association and the United States Police Canine Association.
My hope is K-9 Trey’s supporters can be satisfied by his selfless service for the past 8 years. My hope is we are leaving our communities safer. K-9 Trey’s career left an impact that not only validated the need for this program but paved the way for its future. K-9 Trey was the first K-9 in this community and with that came a lot of growth and learning as to what it takes to have a K-9 program. This knowledge and experience will be passed on to the next K-9 team, and the bar has been set, and I know it will be surpassed.
As K-9 Trey nears his 9th birthday in the spring, I look forward to rewarding his loyalty with a relaxing retirement at home with my family.
I would like to leave you with a quick prayer. God, we thank you for this life, the clothes on our back, the roof over our heads and the food on our tables. We ask you for forgiveness for our sins and the strength to forgive those who have sinned against us. We thank you for our blessings, our family and our friends. We love you Lord, Amen. God is great, Jesus is Lord.
Thank you,
Tyler Lewien

There are no immediate plans to replace K9 Trey, with K9 Vader recently entering service with the county.
