Meeting on Monday, April 12, members of the Stanley Lions remembered and honored 25 year member Dean Boie, who recently passed. Boie was a dedicated Lion who spent a huge amount of his time and talent on most club projects. He was especially remembered for his raffle ticket selling at the Lions Annual Watermelon Festival. It was also announced that his family donated a substantial amount in memorials received from friends and his family. After consultation with his family, it will be decided how the funds will be used. Lion Dean rest in peace and thank you for your service. It was an honor for all fellow Lions to have worked with him.
The first regular order of business, announced by Lion President Jerry Dirkes, was a presentation on local scouting activities by current members of Troop 50 Boy Scouts and their past and present leaders. At the end of the presentation, President Dirkes presented a Lions check for $765 to support the local Troop.
Following the Scouts was a report by Lion Norman Christianson on the Country Terrace Brat Feed which occurred on March 22. Because of COVID, Christianson oversaw the preparation of the food and delivered it on behalf of the local club. Hopefully, next year the Lions will be able to return in person to serve the meal and sponsor games of Bingo.
In other business, it was announced that the Zone Meeting will be held in Jim Falls on Saturday, April 17, while the Moon Park Apartments Brat Feed is scheduled for Monday, April 26. In one more food related announcement, the Lions June Steak Fry will be held on Monday, June 14, at the new Stanley Community Building, with deceased members’ spouses as guests. Invitations to participate in the Boyd Ringspeil Parade and the Cadott Lions Golf Tournament were extended to Stanley Lions. Anyone interested in these should contact President Dirkes.
King Lion Dirkes presented the 2021-22 slate of officers who will be voted on at the May meeting. Jim Jones, President; 1st Vice -President Dave Jankoski; 2nd Vice-President Julianne Lahner; 3rd Vice-President Dave Zschernitz; Secretary Lorena McLoone; Treasurer Jerry Dirkes; Tail Twister Pat Jankoski; Lion Tamer Mary Jo Winkler; Directors, Dave Winkler, Larry Ciokiewicz, Carl Edwardson, and Gary Krueger. Past President Jerry Dirkes and Club Historians Dave and Pat Jankoski. Chairpersons for each Watermelon Festival event were named. The 46th Annual Watermelon Festival will be held on Sunday, July 25. Planning for the Watermelon Festival included use of the new Stanley Community Building for serving the chicken dinner, bingo and the cake walk. New to the Watermelon Festival this year will be the raffle of meat bundles. The regular raffle prizes will include cash and several meat bundles valued at $100 each.
Looking ahead, the Stanley Lions decided to hold their 75th Anniversary on Saturday, September 18, at the new Stanley Community Building.
In a final act, Presdient Dirkes presented Lion Dan Plombon with his 10-year membership pin and Lion Gary Krueger with his 30-year pin. Prior to adjournment Lion Dave Winkler was named the winner of the attendance drawing. The next meeting will be Monday, May 10 at Debbie’s on Broadway.
