Lions make final plans for Annual Watermelon Festival

Posted

The Stanley Lions held their monthly meeting on July 8 at Debbie’s on Broadway, with newly installed Lion President Laurie Foster presiding. A review by Watermelon Fest Chairs indicates all is in order for this year’s Festival to be held on Sunday, July 28.
Lion Jim Jones reported that the collection of plastic will soon result in the obtaining of another bench, as nearly 100 lbs. has been collected. Jones stated that a few more volunteers to help with the project would be appreciated. He also reported that work on the bike trail next year will show the results of the grant funding. While there will be in kind contributions to the project from the school and city, there will still be the need for more funding to meet the grants required 20% match.
In other business, it was reported that the Lions Cheese Curd Stand, at Soo Park during Citywide Thrift Sales, on May 30 and 31, was a success thanks to the great support from the public. It was reported that the Ribfest held on Saturday, July 6, drew 16 competitors from throughout the Midwest. The sanctioned competition was organized by Stanley’s own “Ribmaster,” Deano Tinjum. Trophies given at the event were crafted locally by Excel Steel and Northfork Knotworks. Consideration is being given to having a separate Ribfest next year, when it might be possible to offer ribs for sale to the public at a separate venue. The Lions agreed to help run a food stand at a library event on July 31 from 4-7 pm. It was reported that on May 26, 14 new trees were planted replacing trees that did not take from last year’s plantings in city parks. So far all trees are looking good this year. Any community member who would like to donate a cake for the Watermelon Cake Walk can deliver it to the Community Building the day of the event.
The Lions next meeting will be held on August 12, at the Stanley Community Center with non-Lions who helped at the Watermelon Festival being invited guests. Before adjourning, Lion Jerry Dirkes’ name was drawn as the attendance winner.
