Meeting on Monday, October 14, it was announced that the Stanley Lions will again do vision screening of Stanley-Boyd Elementary School students on November 4. Six Lions volunteered to be helpers to accomplish the community service/youth project.
In reports, Lion Dave Winkler noted that the deer hide collection basket is again at Express Mart and that deer hides have already started coming in. The collection basket will be in place until after the regular hunting season. All donated hides help fund youth with handicaps to attend Lions Camp Rosholt at no cost to their family. Lion Dave Jankoski gave an overview of the Zone Meeting that he and Lion Jerry Dirkes attended at Chippewa Falls on Tuesday, October 8. The meeting featured a presentation on hearing problems and the devices that help the hearing impaired. Club reports included the Chippewa County Lions Clubs who recently built 20 beds at the Jim Falls Lions Clubhouse, for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Program, that provides beds for kids who have none. Finally, the meeting concluded with a presentation on the needs related to the devastation from recent hurricanes in the impacted states. In response, the Stanley Lions voted a $500 donation to Lions International Hurricane Relief efforts. In a plastic collection update, it was announced that another bench has been received as a result of collecting 1000 lbs. of plastic and it has been given to the Stanley-Boyd Elementary School for placement in a classroom as a “reading bench.” It was agreed that the next bench will be going to the Stanley Community Association for use as they see fit.
In other business, it was announced that the new Lions highway signs have arrived and they will be placed on the two Highway 29, “Welcome to Stanley” signs. Lion Norm Christianson announced that the Annual Sunset Homes Brat Supper and Bingo is scheduled for Monday, October 28, at 5 pm. The Trunk or Treat event this year will again be held at Chapman Park on Saturday, October 26. Lion John Pozdell is serving as chairperson. Tickets for the Lions Annual Christmas Raffle were distributed by Lion Winkler. Only 500 tickets are sold at $10 each, and cash prizes are awarded each day from December 1-24. Lions members have tickets for anyone interested in purchasing one. Russ Jensen, the principal at St. Joseph’s School in Boyd gave a presentation on his school’s visit to the Ferguson Apple Orchard and the lessons learned by the students. The schools outing received a $250 Youth Support donation towards the cost of bus transportation.
Several new agenda items included a presentation by President Kristi Weiland, of the Stanley Community Association, on the Splash Pad and Handicapped Playground projects that they are providing the leadership to have built at Chapman Park. The project cost is estimated at $470,000 for the Splash Pad and $350,000 for the Handicap Playground. The presentation aimed to create community awareness of the scope of the projects and to promote support for helping it become a reality. Lion Jim Jones presented a proposal for the Stanley Lions sponsoring a trip to the Chanhassen Theater to attend the performance of “Grease.” Trip attendees will be limited to 56 individuals and the cost will be $150 per person. Lion Jones was given a green light to organize the trip. A good number of Lions indicated an interest in their attending. The date will be Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Before adjourning Lion Norm Christianson was announced as the attendance drawing winner. He was present to collect the winning. The next meeting will be on November 11, at Debbie’s on Broadway.
