The State Cross Country Meet for Divisions 1 thorough 3 opens this Saturday, Oct. 28 at Wisconsin Rapids, and when it does Stanley-Boyd will be represented.
Lucas Walker, a senior at Stanley-Boyd High School, qualified for the Division 2 race with his time at the Colby Sectional Oct. 21, running the 5K in 17:01.
Now qualified for state, Walker’s jersey number on Saturday will be 70, competing with 39 other Division 2 runners for a chance at the podium.
Active with the cross country program for one year now at Stanley-Boyd but five in total, Walker said practice was important.
“I practice five days a week, sometimes six,” he said of the routine to make state. As to nutrition, it matters as well.
“Absolutely,” Walker said when asked if nutrition is important. “You have to eat right and you have to eat a lot as a runner. You can’t skip meals.” If you do, “you will feel it,” he said. Orioles Head Cross Country Coach Nick Mahr shared more.
“It’s exciting to have a state qualifier,” Mahr said. “It is not an easy task in cross country with only two teams and five individuals qualifying out of a sectional with a hundred runners in it. To make it tougher we jumped up to Division 2 after being in Division 3 for years. Lucas ran a really fast 5K in 17:01 and was still the last qualifier out of our sectional.”
That being said, state has been a long term goal of Walker’s.
“I wanted to make state in both cross country and track,” he said. “Now I want to make podium once I get there.”
The 5K Division 2 race for state takes place at the Wisconsin Rapids Golf Course this Saturday, Oct. 28, with shuttle and parking from the high school. There will be online tickets only, with more information at the WIAA website. Race start time is 12:35 p.m.
