Major damage done to Cadott school

Major damage was done to the Cadott High School roof from the EFO tornado that touched down in Cadott on July 21. Damage replacement estimates for the school’s portion are $85,000 to $100,000. It was reported that the tornado lifted up the roof and the foam is no longer adhered to the roof. The school board agreed to look at replacing the entire roof as the roof damaged was put on in 2001 and is nearing its life expectancy. Bids will be obtained and an engineer hired as anything over $100,000 requires an engineer’s plans and oversight. +++ Plans are underway for the construction of a Holcombe Veterans Memorial, to be located on 263rd Street, just off State Highway 27. The Town of Lake Holcombe has agreed to take ownership as a way to help with fundraising, insurance and tax exempt status.

On August 3rd Emily Berge, the Democratic candidate for the 68th Wisconsin Assembly District, visited Thorp and met with a group of Thorpites at City Park. Berge is a mental health therapist from Eau Claire, who wants to work towards continuing to improve the lives of Wisconsinites. She discussed her concerns about education, mental health and health care for all.+++ The Thorp Alumni Association’s 2020 directory is almost ready. Having been printed, it is now in the assembly stage and should be ready in the next couple weeks. +++ If you’re traveling around Thorp, avoid Grant and Boardman Streets as work is now underway to replace all the underground utilities and construct a new street with curbs and gutters.

Bloomer High School held graduation exercises for the Class of 2020 on Thursday, July 29. The event was held at the football stadium. The class was split into two sections, seniors with last names starting with A-L attended the ceremony at 6 pm, followed by seniors with the last names M-Z attending at 7:30 pm. +++ On the front page of the Bloomer Advance: Monthly COVID-19 Deaths In Wisconsin – March – 16, April – 300, May – 276, June – 192, and July – 150. On July 23, John Gaier, District Administrator at Neillsville, was one of three District Administrators who testified via teleconference before a group of senators on the challenges rural school districts faced during the shutdown. +++ The Greenwood School Board has eased the fears of school district staff who may come down with COVID-19, or come in contact with someone who comes down with it. The school board has created a new category of paid leave which is open ended as to how much leave will be allowed. The board will also pay support staff in the event that the school district needs to revert to teaching virtual again. This is felt to be a way for the school district to show its commitment to their staff.

The City of Abbotsford voted 4-3 to not contribute funding to the Clark County Economic Development Corporation this year. Communities in Clark County are asked to pay $1.50 per resident, meaning that Abbotsford and Neillsville pay the most, as they are the largest cities in the county. The amount that will not be paid is $3,397. Those voting against the funding felt that Abbotsford was not being promoted enough and that they have a good team of their own to promote industrial development. +++ With the resignation of its police chief and the officer, the Dorchester Village Board is looking at three options: Contracting with Clark County Sheriff’s Department, contracting with the Colby-Abbotsford Police Department, or replacing the officers who resigned. +++ With COVID-19 lingering and the number of high needs students in the Colby School District, the school board has authorized the hiring of a full-time nurse. +++ Kevin Spindler, is leaving the Colby School District, after teaching there for 22 years. He is known for the Show Choir Spectaculars that he produced for the past 16 years. He has also put on Madrigal dinners for all 22 years. He is looking forward

In 2019, kayak races in Owen were washed out twice. In 2020, COVID-19 didn’t allow the races to occur. So not to be outdone, Jackie Reinke of O-W Sports and Liquor, invites people to participate in a raffle to win the kayaks that were going to be given away. Tickets can be purchased at O-W Sports and Liquor and at the August 15th Car Show that will be held in downtown Owen with the drawing to be held at 4 pm. +++ Owen City Offices will be moving to a remodeled building, formerly owned and occupied by WE Energies. Work on the building, that was purchased by the city, is projected to be done in February or March of 2021. +++ On Thursday, July 30, more than a dozen volunteers gathered at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee, to make face masks for the students and staff at Owen-Withee Schools. Grants from Thrivent Financial and the O-W FFA paid for the material used in the project.
Tri-County News The Osseo Lions Club, recognized the Osseo Police Department, as its Citizens of the Month, at the July 13 city council meeting. +++ On Saturday, July 25, the Hixton Fire Department, hosted a training day for fire departments from Alma Center, Hatfield, Hixton and Merrillan. There were 30 members from the participating departments involved.

On Saturday, August 1, about a dozen homes on West Main Street in Mondovi were evacuated due to a bomb threat. Mondovi Police and Fire Department conducted the evacuation. The Dane County Bomb Squad was called to assist. After their arrival, a team entered the second floor apartment and while they found items of concern, no actual explosive devices were found. +++ On Thursday, August 6, the first edition of the Buffalo County News came off the press. It covers news from Mondovi, Gilmanton, Modena, Eleva, Strum, Alma, Cochrane, Fountain City, Buffalo City and Waumandee. +++ The City of Mondovi is still working on getting their new Waste Water Treatment Plant’s plans approved. This effort is now over two years in the making.

A new Jackson County animal shelter is nearing completion. The new shelter cost just over $1 million, of which $845,280 has been raised through community support. The new shelter has been the dream of both Jackson County and the Jackson County Humane Society.

The Arcadia School District will be providing in-person instruction, unless the school is ordered to be closed by the state, county health department, or the school needs to close because of lack of staff to operate. Masks are being mandated for all students and staff, while they are on school property and on school sponsored transportation, The school will also provide parent elected remote learning. +++ A proposal is on the table for Independence, Whitehall and Blair to hire an attorney to monitor the bankruptcy of Hi-Crush Mining Company. Hi-Crush is reportedly working feverishly to restructure its debt. All three cities have money set-aside for reclamation of the mining sites, and so far those set aside funds are deemed safe from bankruptcy proceedings.
