The Stanley Common Council is firmly behind the D.R. Moon Memorial Library—and the mayor is on record about it.
Approved in the consent agenda items Monday May 6, the letter by Mayor Mike Henke addressed to “fellow D. R. Moon supporters,” declares support for the library expansion and historic restoration project.
“The City of Stanley council is supportive of the D.R. Moon Memorial Library’s efforts to improve access and library resources through the proposed expansion and historic restoration project,” the letter states. “The library serves hundreds of people each week, both residents of Stanley our rural small town, as well as the surrounding rural area including the Amish and Old Order Mennonite Communities. The library offers quality print and digital materials and resources as well as accessible technology and support. It serves as a central hub for community engagement for all ages in Stanley.”
Next going into the library’s long history and its status as the only building in the city listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the letter by Henke notes repairs needed and space expansion.
“Thank you for your consideration of this project,” he writes. “We are confident that this funding would have a lasting and positive impact on our community and the surrounding area as well. We are excited to see this focal point of our community become a more accessible and updated space to continue to meet our area’s learning and resource needs for the next 120+ years.”
Kicking off its capital campaign last year and entering the home stretch, the library looks to raise $4.5 million towards the renovation and expansion, including grants and private donations.
