Merlin Gerrits 1940 – 2022

Posted

Merlin Earl Gerrits passed away November 19, 2022 at Traditions Assisted Living. Merlie was born in Stanley to Martin and Olga (Pilgrim) Gerrits. In his early years, he worked at the Stanley Corporation and later for Wisconsin Gas Company, where he was often seen in his white van around town. After retirement, Merlie kept busier than ever helping out at Reit’s Garden Center, mowing lawns and shoveling snow for others, all while keeping up his own acreage and tending his large garden. His produce was shared with many! He will be remembered not only for his giving spirit, but also for his jokes, sense of humor, and for the love he had for his daughters. He never missed a chance to tell them how proud he was of them and to thank them for “taking care” of him! He will be greatly missed by many.

Merlin is survived by his wife Sylvia, daughters Lisa Erickson and Lora Schultz, son-in-law Kent Schultz, grandchildren Alysa Sworsky (Brian), Ashton Erickson (Kathryn), Kylea Breier (Nick), and Olivia Schultz. He has 4 great-grandchildren: Gerrit, Grant, Finley, and Ivy.

His surviving siblings are Larry Gerrits and Judy Nye along with many nieces and nephews. Merlin was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Kenny, Gail, Alan, Jerry, and Richard (Dick).

A celebration of life (with coffee of course!) will be planned for the spring. A huge thank you goes out to the team at Traditions Assisted Living and Hospice for their compassionate care during Merlin’s short stay. The family requests that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society in Merlin’s name. You can call 1-800-227-2345 to donate.
