Around 6 am on Sunday, April 3, emergency crews were called to the Countryside Motel in Cadott for a fire, which destroyed at least a third of the structure. According to the Cadott Police Department, all the people in the building were evacuated, with some sustaining minor injuries. +++ A city wide spring yard waste clean-up took place in Cornell from April 12-16. City crews picked up brush, small diameter limbs and bagged leaves and grass. No rubbish, garbage or lumber was allowed. Residences were limited to a pickup load. City residents can also haul their yard waste to the site behind the city shop. +++ The Cadott Village Board heard that the village’s annual audit revealed that water and sewer rates should both be increased. The auditor recommended that the sewer rate increase is the most urgent.
The Thorp Courier
On Monday, April 5, the Thorp School Board held a special meeting and after deliberation voted to immediately make wearing a mask inside the classroom optional for students. Students will still be required to wear a mask in the hallways. Along with the decision, comes the stipulation that if the school were to have 10 percent of their total student population quarantined, then the mandate would revert back to the requirement to wear a mask at all times. +++ With the regular Thorp Easter Egg Hunt canceled, community children had some festive fun on Easter Sunday, at Thorp Super Valu, which sponsored an Easter Egg and Cuties Hunt. Each participant left the store with a basket full of candy and Cuties (oranges). +++ From the Thorp Courier Memory Lane – 100 Years Ago (1921) – Son of Tarzan and a five reel special feature every Tuesday night at the Thorp Opera House. Admission 15-25 cents.

Enjoying the nice weather, hundreds of people came out for the Bloomer Chamber’s Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 3. The Easter Bunny, and his friend Chick, were on hand to greet kids and pose for pictures. Three tables were set-up to exchange tickets from inside the eggs for prizes. +++ On Wednesday afternoon, March 31, Hwy 53 traffic was stopped and detoured between Chetek and New Auburn because of a grass fire. Dry conditions and 10-15 mph west winds fanned the flames, which reached as high as six feet. The fire burned about a quarter mile along the median and west ditch. The Chetek and New Auburn Fire Departments responded and were praised for the job they did extinguishing the fire. +++ Humor from “Blooms” In Bloomer – A student at a management school came up behind a pretty girl and hugged her without any warning. The surprised girl said, “What was that?” The guy smiled at her, “Direct marketing!” The girl slapped him soundly, “What was that!” asked the boy holding his cheek. “Customer feedback.”
O-W Enterprise During the first week in April each year, the American Public Health Assocaition invites communitiers across the country to observe National Public Health Week. In ssupport of this endeavor, the Clark County Health Department recognizes individuals and/ or organizations as “Friend of Publci Health.” This year being recognized are teh Owen-Withee-Curtiss Fire District and Greenwood Area Fire and Ambulance for their contributions to public health and prevention. Both of these organizations played a vital role in helping plan, coordinate and implement the Clark County COVID-19 mass vaccination clinics.

Voters in the Abbotsford and Colby School District, by a 775 to 388 marginal, favored continuing the study of consolidating the two school districts. +++ By a vote of 4-3, the Abbotsford City Council voted against a motion to start the process of abolishing the position of city administrator.

Voters in Owen rejected increasing their property taxes to gain another (3rd) full-time police officer. The vote was 92 for and 115 opposed. The tax increase needed to increase the part-time position to full-time was $19,910. The vote in Withee was 46 yes and 67 No. +++ The Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Wood Grove Workers 4-H was held at Owen-Withee High School but was a drive thru event this year.
