60 years ago February 7, 1963 Fred Zais, 61, Dies Monday of Heart Attack A heart attack took the life of Fred Zais, long-time deputy sheriff and police officer, early Monday morning as he was shoveling snow in front of St. Anne’s Convent on South Franklin Street. The funeral will be held today, Thursday, at 9:00 a.m. from St. Anne’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Edmund Cramer officiating. Mr. Zais, who lived at 336 Garfield Street, was 61 years of age. He was born October 18, 1901 at Boyd, the son of John and Catherine (Wenzel) Zais. He came to Stanley at six years of age. He was married January 8, 1929 to Lucille Harless, who survives along with one son, Frederic Jr. of Eau Claire; three brothers, Henry of El Paso, Texas; Paul and John of Stanley; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Kerr of Minneapolis 70 years ago January 29, 1953Soo Passenger Trains 1, 2To Go Off February 15th The Public Service Commission Tuesday granted the Wisconsin Central railroad permission to discontinue operating Trains 1 and 2, with service to terminate on February 15.
