Surrounded by bushes on an embankment at the corner of First and McKnight Street, an old house is soon to undergo trial by fire, making way for new construction in the ashes. 218 First Avenue was purchased last year by the Chippewa County Housing Authority, but as repairs to the old residence were deemed too costly it will soon become practice for CVTC students.
The week before burning on March 27, Stanley Fire will be inside to have their own training, per Stanley Fire Chief Korey Hagenson. With the auspicious event soon to come but not yet completed, we thought we’d do an address search in the Badgerlink newspaper archive, to see what we might be able to learn. (minutes go by and Badgerlink stops our search several times at 1,000 entries, chiding the silly human for its “overly broad” search criteria).
As it turns out, we didn’t find much, though with more time to spare the five bedroom, one bath 1,200 square foot house may give up its secrets just yet. Last selling for $42,000 on Novemember 20 2019, its just one of several properties in the city that have been or are up for sale currently. 218 First Avenue may not be around much longer, but several other properties are listed for interested buyers in the area. Don’t take our word for it, though, check the realty listings.
As to the mystery of 218 First Avenue, we petition our readers for their memories on this matter, in order that due justice be done to the memory of 218 First Avenue, before a new house rises in its place. Do you, or someone that you know, have information to share on this residence? When it was built? Who lived in it? Speak now or tell the local historical society. Once March 27 rolls around, the old house at 218 First Avenue, will be all but consigned to the history books.
218 First Avenue will undergo a controlled burn soon to provide training for CVTC students, after it was purchased last year by the Chippewa County Housing Authority and repairs deemed too costly. The garage has already been demolished in preparation for a safe farewell, with new construction to rise on the home lost after the flames subside.
