Hard fought second half sees Oriole boys maintain lead
Taking their game on the road last week, the Oriole boys varsity logged a 68 55 win over Thorp Friday Feb. 2, putting them sixth in the Western Cloverbelt with a 5-7 conference record and 6-13 overall. Basketball head coach Dakota Nichols reflected on how things had gone after the game.
“I thought we had a really good week of basketball,” he said. “The boys are really improving and taking care of the basketball and boxing out. Thorp went on a run in the second half, but the boys did a great job of maintaining their composure and we hit some crucial shots.”
Key to the Oriole win was Henry Hoel, who logged 31 points and 14 rebounds, as well as Haydn Gustafson, who made 12 points against Thorp.
The win at Thorp came on the heels of a win at home against Cadott 68 – 48, which saw Hoel sink 19 points, while Gustafson make 20.
Also factoring into the Tuesday win against Cadott were a two-pointer by Landon Karlen, three-pointer by Logan Burzynski, 1 three-pointer and two free throws each by Dylan Goebel and Dominic Raffetto, as well as a series of two pointers, by Cam Kohls, Carter Isenberger, and Riley Weltzin.
The Orioles play McDonell Central at Stanley-Boyd on Thursday, Feb. 9. Game start is 7:15 p.m.
