Oriole football overcomes 22 point deficit to win 36-28 at Marathon Friday

Don’t count a game lost, until it’s over. With a 22-point deficit in the second quarter against Marathon Friday, the Orioles came back to win 36 – 28 for a 1-1 win-loss record so far this season. Orioles Head Coach Jeff Koenig shared some thoughts after the game.

“That was a great football game,” Koenig said of the Oriole win over Marathon’s Red Raiders. “The team kept improving throughout the game and never quit.”

Attributing the win to a “total team effort,” Koenig said the defense and special teams made big plays, while the offense came together when needed most. “I’m very proud of the mental toughness the team showed,” he said of the Orioles coming back to win in overtime.

As to the game outtakes, there were several highlights. Makng the touchdowns Friday were Henry Hoel, Logan Burzynski, and Landon Karlen, backed up with a solid team effort. Before the celebration, came hard work, as things didn’t quite start out as planned.

Coming off the first quar ter with three touchdowns and a duo of two point conversions it was 22-0 in Marathon’s favor, while half time still saw Mara- thon with a 14-point lead following two touchdowns by Stanley-Boyd and one by Marathon, with two extra points for the Orioles. Holding back Marathon from scoring in the third quarter, the Orioles were able to score and close the gap by seven points, for a fourth quarter start of 28-21. Keeping up the pressure on Marathon and tying to go into overtime off a touchdown pass by Burzynski to Hoel, the end came for Marathon after a touchdown by Burzynski for a five -yard gain followed with a successful two-point conversion in overtime, leaving the score when the dust settled at 36 – 28, in the Oriole’s favor.

The Orioles head to Durand Friday night to face off with the Panthers at 7 p.m.
