Lily Hoel scores 10 points, Leslie Derks makes 8

Officially, the score for the Stanely-Boyd/Fall Creeck match up was 34 – 54, as above, but something strange happened en route to the final, if not quite changing the outcome. For those watching via livestream, it came down to the second period, around 14:20.

Officially then, the score with just fourteen minutes and twenty seconds left in the second period between Stanley-Boyd and Fall Creek was registered at 22 – 43, in Fall Creek’s favor– that is, until Stanley-Boyd’s number 22 Lily Hoel scored a two-pointer at the appropriately designated basket. With the livestream camera shifting downcourt for the rebound, when the full scoreboard next came into view it read 22 – 45, in Fall Creek’s favor.

Well, ok, so we’re all human and make mistakes occasionally, but if one truly wishes to verify such things, it’s all videotaped online. We might just be seeing things, after all. The scoreboard error, corrected within a timeclock minute, deleted said points from Fall Creek but did not credit the Orioles with a corresponding two-point boost–so far as is known.

With that little detail out of the way, the Stanley-Boyd varsity girls fell 34 – 54 (or else 36-52) to the Fall Creek Crickets at home, coming off an away game at Thorp where the Cardinals defended their home territory successfully for an outcome of 47 – 42, in favor of the Cardinals. Regarding the game play more generally, varsity girls coach and Stanley-Boyd educator Alison Becker had the following to say regarding the Oriole performance. “The Fall Creek game we had a seven to eight minute lull of not making shots and a let up defensively,” Becker made known, adding that there had been “too many second chance shots for Fall Creek.” As to the second half,Becker said that, “we continued struggling at making baskets but our defense was better as the second half score was Fall Creek 17, Stanley-Boyd 14.” Of the potential scoring error resulting in two extra points, Becker said that, “the score could be wrong. I will go back to check the film.” Meanwhile, singled out for special mention were number 22 Lily Hoel, along with number 24 Teagan Becker as second leading scorer with 11 points per game and an apg of 3.8. Not to be left out were number 10 Emily Brenner and number 34 Malorie Eslinger, each scoring six points per game. The Oriole girls next face off against Regis at Regis in Eau Claire, having won their home round against the Eau Claire parochial school 54 -49 on January 8. We can’t wait for the rematch!
