JV and C-Team ended up getting cancelled, but the Varsity Girls Volleyball squad still faced off with three other schools at Greenwood Thursday September 2.

Playing a total of two matches each against Port Edwards, Greenwood, and Alma Center Lincoln, the Oriole Girls Volleyball team came away victorious in all six, with set scores of 25 – 20 and 25 – 14 against Port Edwards, scores of 25 – 15 and 25 – 11 in match play against Greenwood, and finally two identical set scores of 25 – 15 against Alma Center Lincoln.

As to the stat leaders, Emily Brenner took 36 kills while Lily Hoel took 18 kills and 6.5 blocks in match play. According to wiaawi.org, a ‘kill’ in volleyball “is awarded any time an attack attempt is unreturnable of uncontrolled by the opponent leading to a point scored and any time the attack attempt leads directly to a block error and a point scored.” Varsity Volleyball coach Rainy Antolak shared more in addition on the Greenwood tournament when reached for comment.

“We went 3-0 at the Greenwood Quad,” she said. “We struggled early on with our serves, but we were able to clean those up after the first match. Our overall play improved throughout the tournament, and I was pleased with our defensive prowess,” Antolak went on. “We need to continue to improve our offensive execution and speed of the game as we head into a competitive part of our schedule.”

As of Tuesday, the Oriole girls varsity together with JV and C-Team were scheduled to face off next against Loyal at Loyal High School Tuesday September 7, a date not cancelled as of press time, all three teams (JV, C-Team, and Varsity) scheduled to play.
