Oriole Spikers win big at Somerset Invitational

The Oriole varsity spikers are having a good year.

Coming off 3-0 win against Regis Oct. 5 followed by a 3-0 win over Osseo_Fairchild the next day, the Oriole varsity took to Somerset, where it won a tournament championship this Saturday, beating out Glenwood City, Barron, Ellsworth, and Somerset to clinch the win. Head coach Karley Wiensch shared some thoughts after the match play was done.

“WOW!” She said. “We played so great as a team, everyone put 110% effort into the Championship game, beating Somerset (2512 & 25-9).” Going on to say this put them on good ground for the playoffs if they kept at it, Wiensch had more as well.

“We had key wins over Barron and Somerset, which will help with the seeding meeting on Wednesday,” she said.

Coming into Saturday the Oriole spikers started off against Glenwwod City, securing a victory in two matches with scores of 25-6 and 25-12 respectively. Stat leaders against Glenwood were Kaden Drehmel with 12 assists and Avery Vait with 10, Emily Brenner scoring six aces and eighty kills. Teagen Becker took five kills against Glenwood City while Tina Benson made12 digs and Kayte Licht made six.

Following up Glenwood City with Barron the Orioles won 2 -1 in match play, with scores of 27-26, 23-25, and 15-10 respectively. Leading the score tally against Barron was Kayte Licht with 15 digs , three block kids, and six kills, while Emily Brenner took 23 digs , six aces and 14 kills.

Moving on to Ellsworth the Orioles came away 2-0 against the Pierce County capital, with scores of 25-13 and 25-12 to seal the win.

Winning the pool they were placed in at Somerset, the Orioles then played Somerset for the tournament championship, coming away 2-0 with scores of 25-12 and 25-9.

Closing out the tournament action Licht made 11 digs and five kills, with Benson making eight digs and Drehmel making nine assists.

Vait contributed 18 assists to the tournament victory, while Brenner made 17 kills. Sophia Anderson followed this with five while Beck er made four.

It’s been a good year for the Oriole spikers, with things not over yet!
