Facing off against McDonell at Stanley-Boyd Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Orioles came away 1-3 against the Macks.
Match scores for Tuesday at home were 25-18, 27-29, 19-25, 23-25, with Orioles Head Volleyball Coach Karley Wiensch sharing more after the game.
“The game was intense, as it would be with being the 1st conference game,” she said. “There were a lot of good rallies and hustle by both teams. We made little mistakes that McDonell capitalized on. We had some positive things, we were ahead most of the games, just needed to be more consistent on closing the door and not letting the other team come back or get long runs to create momentum for next games.
“Like I always say, the Western Cloverbelt is a strong conference and anyone can win any given night, it all depends on who is more prepared or who shows up to compete.”
With the Orioles ranked fourth in the state for Division 3 after McDonell, Wiensch said the loss would not define the team or its trajectory.
“This one loss will not dictate how conference play will go,” she said. “It is one game and we need to move on to the next, and prepare for Cadott.”
Following up play against McDonell with a tournament at Unity on Saturday, the Orioles came away in better shape, winning against all five teams. Match scores were as follows:
Stanley-Boyd vs Prairie Farm (22-25, 25-18, 15-12)
Stanley-Boyd vs Glenwood City (25-13, 25-15)
Stanley-Boyd vs Clear Lake (24-26, 25-19, 15-13)
Stanley-Boyd vs Unity (25-19, 17-25, 15-10)
Stanley-Boyd vs Cumberland (25-14, 25-12)
Wiensch reflected on the tournament after results.
“Overall the tournament had some good competition,” she said. “We just added this tournament for this year. Unity is in the other Sectional, so I thought it would be a good tournament to add for this year. Overall we played well as a team. We were not perfect Saturday, but still came out with winning the tournament. Our JV was also at the tournament and also won. Both Varsity and JV took 1st at the Unity invite.”
With Stanley-Boyd’s record 23-3 thus far, the Orioles face off with Bloomer at home on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Match starts is 7:15 p.m.
