Bump, set, spike—celebrate! Taking to Greenwood, Wisconsin for a volleyball quad September 1, the Oriole girls varsity volleyball team took all three opponents in stride, besting Port Edwards, Greenwood, and Lincoln in two matches a piece, for a 6 -0 match outcome for the night. As such, the Oriole record is currently 9 -4 this season.

Starting out against Port Edwards, the Oriole varsity took match wins of 25 – 11 and 25 – 14 respectively.

Statistics for the Port Edwards match included Emily Brenner with 10 kills, 8 digs and two aces. With Kayte Licht scoring nine kills, Tina Benson 16 digs, with assists from Kaden Drehmel and Avery Vait, 10 and 12 respectively.

For Greenwood, meanwhile, the Orioles took away match wins of 25-8 and 25-10, with Brenner scoring six kills and six digs. Licht made four kills alongside three aces and six digs, while Sierra Close scored four kills and Benson made eight digs, Drehmel and Vait assisting as before.

As to matches against Lincoln, the Orioles won 25-6 and 25-20 respectively, with Close getting five kills, Licht seven kills and seven digs, Vait two aces and nine assists, Benson eight digs, Drehmel seven assists, and Brenner six digs along with two kills.Volleyball head coach Karley Wiensch shared some thoughts on challenges faced thus far and the road ahead.

“Some challenges that came about when we were playing at Greenwood was that the competition was below our level of play,” she said.

“The girls did a good job pushing points and working together as a team. Due to the lack of competition, the girls struggled to stay consistent with keeping energy or focusing on what they needed to work on during the sets to make themselves as players better and to be great teammates to one another. We worked well, but could work on not riding the rollercoaster of emotions or momentum swings during easier matches,” she said.

The Oriole varsity volleyball team next plays at Merrill High School September 10 in an all day invitational starting at 9 a.m.
