The Orioles traveled to La Crosse Friday, Dec. 27, taking part in the two day Bi-State Classic. Head Coach Jake Fitzsimmons shared thoughts after the results.
“Bi-State is one of the toughest tournaments in the entire state as there are over 70 teams that compete there and there are a lot of D1 and D2 teams,” he said. “Willy Graham led us with a 6th place finish in a tough bracket. The girls wrestled tough as Lillian Fitzl, Nevaeh Walters, and Sierra Marten all won three matches. On the boys side Aaron Sturm and Dylan Seichter won three matches and wrestled well. They are both making improvements each time they wrestle. I am excited to see how we can do against our conference and local schools once we get both our boys and girls lineup back to full strength in January.”
As for the boys, Willy Graham (12-4) won by fall over four consecutive opponents and scored 30 points in the 285 pound weight class before stumbling somewhat in the semifinal to finish sixth place overall, losing the fifth place match by fall to Grant Mathews (18-2) of Riverdale.
Also in highlights from La Crosse for the boys were Aaron Sturm (11-9) in the 175 round weight class and Dylan Seichter (9-5) in the 190 pound weight class.
Sturm took four victories on three matches before closing out consolation round four to Kadyn Davis (22-5) of Belmont/Platteville having scored five team points for Stanley-Boyd. Seichter won four of five matches and scored four team points. Also of note for the boys team were Caiden Paul (8-6) in the 144 pound weight class and Alex Williams (14-6) in the 165 pound weight class, each scoring seven team points at La Crosse, along with Brody Westrom (6-9) who scored three team points in the 157 pound weight class.
As for the girls, Sierra Marten (8-5) won four of five matches in the 126 pound weight class and scored 10.5 team points, while Lillian Fitzl (8-2) won four of six matches in the 120 pound weight class and scored 6.5 team points. Nevaeh Walters won four of five matches in the 132 pound weight class and scored 10 team points.
Competing at Arcadia Tuesday Jan. 7, the Orioles now prepare for a varsity wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 11 at Merrill. Tournament start is 8:00 a.m.
