With just days to go to regionals, the Oriole varsity wrestlers have had an eventful past few weeks, competing at the Cloverbelt Conference Triangular at Spencer Jan. 22, followed by the Lumberjack Invite at Wausau East Jan. 24, as well as the Cloverbelt Triangular with Abbotsford-Colby and Thorp-Owen-Withee Jan. 29, before taking part in the Somerset Duals on Jan. 30 and the Husky Girls Wrestling Challenge Jan. 31 at Eau Claire North.
As for team stats on the boys team, senior Willy Graham remains in top shape, his record thus far this year 31-5, including 24 pins, one tech, and two majors.
Also of note for the Oriole boys is senior Aaron Sturm, with a record thus far of 23-13 including 16 pins, four tech, and one major.
Graham and Sturm each hit a milestone at Wausau East on Jan. 24, with Graham earning his 150th career pin and Sturm 100th win at the Invite.
As of the present senior Carter Weltzin has 18 pins and a 19-15 record so far this year.
On the girls team this year Nevaeh Walters is having a good year, headed towards regionals with a 27-8 record including 25 pins and one tech. Sophomores Ava Kempf and Koraline Pennala also doing well, Kempf boasting a 21-17 record with 17 pins, one tech, and one major while Pennala has a record of 28-11 with 24 pins and two majors.
As for results from recent competition the Orioles headed to Spencer on Jan. 22 for the Cloverbelt Conference Triangular, where they defeated Elk Mound 39-30 while falling to Spencer/Columbus 54-18.
Notable results from Spencer including Aaron Sturm winning by fall (F 1:07) over Hunter Boyd of Spencer/Columbus, Carter Weltzin winning by fall (Fall 1:31) over Jayden Rinehart, also of Spencer/ Columbus.
Oriole boys wrestlers Ryan Bowe, Willy Graham, Aaron Johnson, and Are Greenhow also logged wins in the ring, some matches earning points by forfeit as well.
Fresh off Spencer the boys team headed to the Lumberjack Invite at Wausau East, coming away 11th with 64 points.
Highlights from Wausau East Lumberjack Invite on Jan. 24 include Willy Graham making his 150th career win and Aaron Sturm his 100th, Sturm finishing third in the 175 pound weight class while Graham finished second in the 215 pound weight class after losing the first place match by fall (Fall 5:52) to Niko Kleinschmidt of DC Everest.
As for the Cloverbelt Triangular in Thorp on Jan. 29, Stanley-Boyd defeated Abby/Colby 60-12 and Thorp Owen-Withee 48-12, winning against both teams.
Notable results from Thorp include Aaron Sturm winning by fall over (Fall 3:08) over Evan Penterman of Thorp/Owen-Withee in the 175 pound weight class, as well as sophomore Kyle Pahl winning by fall (Fall 1:43) over Luke Boehlke of Thorp/Owen-Withee in the 157 pound weight class. Carter Weltzin, Willy Graham, Aaron Johnson, Bentley Shilts, and Ryan Bowe also scored wins on the mat at Thorp.
Shifting from the boys team to the girls, meanwhile, the Stanley-Boyd girls took second at Somerset Duals with 146 team points. Notable girls results from Somerset Duals include Koraline Pennala winning by fall (Fall 2:36) over Auvianna Berg of Unity in Championship Round 3 of the 107 pound weight class. Ava Kempf also won by fall (Fall 0:17) in Championship Round 3 over Sianah Morales of Unity for the 114 pound weight class, while Lillian Fitzl won by fall (Fall 0:21) in Championship Round 3 over Alyssa Chance of Unity. Sophomore Ziva Blair won by fall (Fall 2:31) in Championship Round 5 over Kendra Bantz of Unity, while Nevaeh Walters won by fall (Fall 1:34) over Isabelle Holden of Unity in Championship Round 3 for the 145 pound weight class.
Competing at Eau Claire in the Husky Girls Wrestling Challenge Jan. 31, the Oriole girls team placed Stanley-Boyd girls placed 10th overall with 73 team points.
Take aways from the Husky Girls Wrestling Challenge at Eau Claire include Nevaeh Walters winning by fall (fall 0:30) over Kaylee Roberts of Tomahawk in the third place match for the 138 pound weight class as well as Koraline Pennala winning by fall (F 4:36) in the 107 pound seventh place match over Payson Speltz of Lewiston-Altura-Rushford-Peterson.
Ava Kemp won by fall (Fall 2:00) in the 114 pound fifth place match over McKenzie Killian of Blair-Taylor.
Other results from Eau Claire include sophomore Ziva Blair wining by fall (Fall 1:10) over Zoe Troff of Amery in the 126 pound 15th place match. Brianna Paul won the 13th place match by fall (Fall 0:22) for the 152 pound weight class over Adrienne Johnson of Superior.
With regular season fast drawing to a close, the boys and girls head to regionals next, individual boys sectionals to be held Saturday, Feb. 14 at Independence/Gilmanton, with the individual girls regionals scheduled for Edgar on Friday, Feb. 13.
