The Oriole varsity cross country team competed at Independence on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The high school boys took second place overall with 66 points while the high school girls took third with 70 points. The middle school boys took first place with 56 points, while the middle school girls took fifth place with 110 points. Top Stanley-Boyd finishes for high school boys included John Smit with second place and a time of 18:18.6, Cameron Natzke with a sixth place and a time of 19:25.6, and Hunter Ogle with eighth place and a time of 19:53.9.
Top finishes for high school girls included Aaliyah Prissel with ninth place and a time of 23:24.8, while Quinn Hendzel finished top in the middle school results with 19th place and a time of 13:16.4, followed by Josslyn Murray in 21st with a time of 14:12.3.
Orioles head coach Nick Mahr shared more after the meet.
“We raced at Independence on Tuesday Aug 25,” he said. “Stand out high school runners were freshmen Aaliyah Prissel, finishing 9th in her first high school race and sophomore John Smit finishing second despite having to stop and tie his shoe. As far as the team competition goes we were without Mariah Wehling and Vaida Chwala in the girls race. If they were able to race Tuesday we would have challenged for first place. The boys finished second behind a good Mondovi team. The boys team is young with one junior and no seniors. I expect them to improve a lot this season and for the next two years.”
The Orioles now compete at the home meet Tuesday, Sept. 10.
