The Orioles took on Elk Mound last week in back to back games Tuesday and Thursday, falling 11-0 on April 28 and finishing 8-4 two days later on April 30.
In the first matchup, Elk Mound took control early with two runs in the first and one in the second before breaking the game open with an eight-run fourth. The Orioles managed four hits, with one each from Deven Parker, Dylan Robinson, Koebin Wundrow and Porter Goettl, but couldn’t generate sustained offense, leading to an 11-0 loss against the Mounders.
Two days later, Stanley-Boyd responded with a stronger performance. Elk Mound again built an early lead, but the Orioles answered with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Stanley-Boyd finished with six hits, highlighted by RBIs from Weltzin and Wundrow, while Goettl sparked the offense with four stolen bases. The game finish saw the Orioles fall 8-4 to the Mounders, but with improvement reflecting growth.
Orioles varsity head baseball coach Ryan Sturm shared more after results.
“Our team is hitting its stride at the right time, and the progress we’re making every day is evident on the field,” he said. “Last week’s performance against Elk Mound—one of the premier programs in the state—proved that we can compete with anyone when we play clean baseball. The most encouraging shifts have been our defensive consistency and our improved discipline at the plate; we are cutting down on strikeouts and forcing our opponents to earn every out. I am incredibly proud of how hard this group is competing and, more importantly, their commitment to getting better every single day. If we continue to build on this momentum, we are going to be a tough team to beat.”
