Starting the season off on a strong note Friday, August 18, the Oriole varsity defeated the Cadott Hornets 44 - 28, coming from behind to secure the victory.

“It was a tough physical game on Friday,"  head coach Jeff Koenig shared after the score tally. “We fell behind early but I was proud of how our boys fought through.”

Starting out the first quarter with Cadott electing to receive, the Hornets brought the ball to the 35-yard line before turnover on down put it in the Oriole’s hands. Landon Karlen took the ball for a 15-yard run but the Orioles were pushed back from the gain in yardage on a holding call.

Following a turnover back to Cadott and a Hornet run up the middle for a touchdown and two point conversion, the Orioles answered with their own run up the middle, Rudy Kletsch securing the first touchdown for the Orioles followed swiftly with a two point conversion by Carter Isenberger to bring the score to an 8-8 tie.

Not content to let the tie stand, Cadott ran for another touchdown in the second quarter but couldn’t make the two point conversion, while a diversion and then long run by Oriole Madden Mahr brought the score 14-14 to repeat the tie.

Unlike the Hornets, however, the Orioles were able to make good their two point conversion to pull ahead 16-14 Orioles.

Following a turnover to Cadott, a tackle by Chase Sturm brought the ball back into Oriole custody, where it stayed in terms of touchdowns for much of the remainder of the game.

With end zone visits made by Karlen and Jake LaGrander before the end of second quarter with a field goal by Jesse Allard and a conversion pass, the score at halftime stood 31-14 Orioles.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Orioles brought the ball to the 33-years line, going on to make touchdowns with Mahr and Kletsch, a field goal kick by Allard bringing the score 44-14 Orioles. With Cadott making an unsuccessful attempt to regain control of the score, the final tally came out 44-28 in the Oriole’s favor. The final analysis?

“It was a good early season game because we were able to get the win but we have a lot of things to work on if we want to play at the level we expect to play at,” Coach Koenig shared of the game against Cadott and season moving forward.
