Taking to the field Friday, Oct. 20 at Oriole Park, the Stanley-Boyd varsity defeated the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Redhawks 34-21.
Starting out the first quarter with the Redhawks receiving, Oriole Brody Westrom made the tackle at the 19-yard line, the team then holding the Redhawks to small gains of four and two yards respectively before the tackle by Jake LaGrander brought fourth down, followed with turnover.
Taking the ball into possession, the Orioles sent the ball upfield with Landon Hoel, followed with two runs by Oriole Landon Karlen.
With Karlen pushed out of bounds on the second run, the next play saw Rudy Kletsch head upfield, an incomplete pass to Mahr and flag on play resulting in personal foul against the Redhawks, resulting in an Oriole first down.
With Kletsch taking the ball for a touchdown but the followup kick no good, the score stood 6-0 Orioles.
Returning the Oriole’s subsequent kick from the 34-yard line, the Redhawks made a gain of 8, bringing it to their 42-yard line, before a tackle by Chase Sturm brought 3rd and short, followed with Fourth and short.
With more back and forth between the Orioles and Redhawks, a quarterback sack by Oriole Gavin Hatfield brought the fourth down with two minutes left in the first quarter, which ended 6-0 Orioles.
Starting out the second, a pass by Carter Isenberger to Madden Mahr and successful extra point attempt by Jesse Allard brought the score tally 13-0 in the Orioles favor, a run by Karlen with 1:13 in the half bringing the score 20-0 Orioles
Receiving a touchback, the Orioles soon took the ball into the end zone, a run by Kletsch brining the score 26-0 Orioles. With return kick by Oriole Alex Williams and some more back and forth, the half came to an end—but there are still two quarters left.
Coming out to play after the half the Redhawks were able to get a touchdown with 8:15 left in the third quarter, the followup point no good, but the score now 26-7 Orioles.
Following an incomplete pass and turnover on down, the Redhawks took the ball to their 38-yard line, amidst pressure from Orioles Storm Tiry and Chase Sturm.
With a fullback handoff bringing an Oriole touchdown and the followup two point conversion good, the score stood 34-7 Orioles, the Hawks making two touchdowns and two extra points to bring the final score 34-21 as time ran out in the fourth quarter. Orioles Head Coach Jeff Koenig shared his thoughts after the game.
“Our boys really played well in the first half, he said. “They played physically with a low pad level. Unfortunately, we struggled to focus and finish the game in the second half. We need to work on playing a complete game.”
As to this Friday against Northwestern, Koenig had the following to share.
“Northwestern is a tough opponent and will be a great test for our team,” he said. “We lost a level 1 playoff game last year at Maple but both teams are very different. We will need to play with much more focus this week.”
