Taking to the floor Thursday, Feb. 8 against McDonell, the Oriole boys varsity came away with a win, the 79 - 55 finish accomplished with 10 points from Landon Karlen, 20 from Haydn Gustafson, 18 from Henry Hoel, 18 from Riley Weltzin, 3 from JJ Heller, 3 from Troy Haas, 2 from Carter Isenberger, and 2 from Jesse Allard. Orioles head coach Dakota Nichols shared thoughts after the score was tallied.
“I was very impressed with our effort on defense,” he said. “We had a season best 16 points in transition, due to forced turnovers by our defense. We also shot 68 percent which is a season best, majority of which were layups due to our defensive intensity and rebounding.
As to the team, Nichols said that, “This group of seniors are so fun to coach and be around on a daily basis. Although we will definitely miss them next year, we know that this season isn’t finished yet.”
With the ball turned over to a new squad as the clock turned 2:18 in the second half, next year will have new leads for the Orioles.
The Orioles play Bloomer Friday, Feb. 16 at Bloomer High School. Game start is 7:15 p.m.
