The Orioles traveled to Neillsville Saturday afternoon to defeat the Neillsville/Granton Warriors 49-0. Among those scoring touchdowns Saturday were Caleb Westrom, Gunnar Goettl, and Max Acker, with extra points by Grant Dusick and Jesse Allard.
Orioles Head Coach Brody Mahr shared more after the game.
“It was a great team victory,” he said. “Neillsville came in showing a strong passing attack in their previous games, and they continued to make some plays through the air early on. Our defense really tightened up in the red zone and came away with several crucial stops that changed the tone of the game.
“The momentum swung our way when Caleb Westrom scooped up a fumble and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. From that point on, our sideline came alive and the offense found its rhythm. Westrom ended up with three total touchdowns, Gunnar Goettl added two more, and freshman Max Acker punched in his first varsity score.
“Offensively, we moved the ball well, finishing with 379 yards and getting contributions from 12 different ball carriers. Defensively, our front played dominant football, we held Neillsville to –22 yards rushing and just 91 total yards overall. It was a complete team effort on both sides of the ball and a step forward in our overall growth as a program.”
Now 2-3 in the conference and 2-5 overall, the Orioles face off against Regis at home on Friday, Oct. 10. Game start is 7:00 p.m.
