The difference a week can make was on display Friday Sept. 15 at Osseo Fairchild, the Oriole football varsity defeating the Thunder 42 - 0.
Taking the field at Osseo-Fairchild, the Oriole varsity started out scoreless in the first quarter—as did their opponents—but that quickly changed as the second opened.
With Oriole Landon Karlen making a touchdown run just four seconds into the second half but the extra point unsuccessful, it was 6-0 Orioles with plenty of clock to go.
Another touchdown by Karlen on a 22 yard gain and successful 2 point conversion (also by Karlen) brought the score 14-0 in the Orioles favor.
With the next touchdown scored by Madden Mahr but unsuccessful extra point, the score became 20-0 in the Oriole’s favor. A touchdown run by Rudy Kletsch with just 16 seconds left in the half and a successful conversion pass from Carter Isenberger to Mahr left the score 28-0 in the Orioles favor.
Coming out of halftime, a touchdown by Mahr with extra point by Jesse Allard brought the score 35-0, while a fourth quarter touchdown pass from Isenberger to Cole Brenner and extra point by Allard closed out game play with 42-0 Orioles.
The Orioles saw a total of 233 passing yards, with 129 rushing for the night, and 233 yards receiving, with Jake LaGrander, Dawson Ewer, Daniel Person, Caleb Westrom, Logan Dorn, Carson Hodowanic, and Jake Lagrander doing their part on yardage to bring the game to a satisfying finish. Head coach Jeff Koenig shared his take after the night’s score was official.
“We saw some improvements as the game went on Friday night,” he said. “Our pad level got better but we still have a long way to go.  We need to improve quickly this week and get ready for a good Neillsville team.”
The Orioles next play the Neillsville/Granton Warriors at Neillsville Friday Sept. 22. Game start is 7:00 p.m.
