It’s a good time to be an Oriole football fan. With zero losses so far this season, the undefeated football team took down Spectrum 51-8 Friday, Sept. 20 at Elk River Minnesota. Head Coach Jeff Koenig shared more after results were in.
“Our defense played very well,” he said. The Spectrum game was a great opportunity for many players to get quality reps. We saw many good things but now have a long list of things to work on and improve upon.”
As for offense, among those making touchdowns for the Orioles Friday were Cole Brenner, Madden Mahr, Rudy Kletsch, Jake LaGrander, and Dawson Ewer. Contributing to extra point attempts was Jesse Allard, with two.
With most of the scoring taking place in the first quarter, the second quarter saw one touchdown and third quarter saw two. Spectrum held the Orioles in the fourth quarter and made a touchdown of its own on a six yard gain, followed up with a two point conversion run for the final.
Returning to defense and statistics, the Orioles made 16 tackles, with Alex Williams and Allard topping the list with three each. Max Conley made two tackles and an interception, while Dredyn Arneson, Caiden Paul, Aaron Sturm, Jackson Gindt, Jake LaGrander, Caleb Westrom, Storm Tiry, and London Mertens each contributed one tackle.
As for rushing stats, the Friday game at Elk River saw the team make 270 yards total, of which 70 were by LaGrander and 59 by Kletsch. Carson Hodowanic rushed 42 yards while Logan Dorn rushed 31 and Ewer rushed 28. Wiliiams rushed 13 and Gunnar Goettl rushed for 10 yards.
Now returned home from Elk River., the Orioles face a new opponent Friday, Sept. 27 at Oriole Park.
“We now have to prepare for a Neillsville/Granton team in a rebuild mode before we prepare for the private school in Eau Claire,” Koenig said. “We have a lot of blocking assignments and techniques to improve upon. Our backs and receivers also need to become more disciplined in their paths and routes.”
Due to face the Warriors Friday, game start is 7 p.m.
