Last year for season opener, Stanley trounced Cadott, winning a blowout victory in Hornet Country. This year, it was Cadott’s turn to win.

With the Orioles failing to score until Madden Mahr made an Oriole touchdown after breaking away from the Hornet ouense in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough best to Cadott this time around, the final score coming out 16 – 6 in the Hornet's favor.

“Congratulations to Cad- ott," Orioles head coach Jeu Koenig said after the game. “They played a clean game and executed their game plan well. We made too many mistakes to come out on top. Fortunately, everything is fix able.” Going on to say that the team just needed to fo- cus on getting better, Koenig also had praise for the Orioles varsity. “I’m proud of the way the boys responded in the fourth quarter,” he said. “They never quit and kept fighting until the end." Starting with a kickou at 7 p.m. from senior exchange student Simon Polman of the Netherlands, the Orioles were introduced as a team, while Cadott made the first score. Following a turnover to the Orioles in the first half, Mad den Mahr took the ball to the 35-yeard line, with turnover on down to the Hornets with 10:46 left in the first quarter.

Returning the ball to play with first and 10 for the Ori – oles at 6:23 left in the first quarter, junior Blake Paul took the ball for a ten-yard gain before a fourth down and incomplete pass turned the ball over yet again. By halftime the score stood 9-0 Hornets.

Coming out of halftime and into the third quarter, junior Henry Hoel hauled in a pass for first down at the 44- yard line. Following a series of incomplete passes on Stanley part, it was time for the turnover, with Cadott starting on its own 20-yard line with 11:08 left in the third quarter.

A pass to Madden Mahr of the Orioles made for first down, while the follow up pass proved incomplete, with a flag on holding against Stanley. Following the flag for Stanley Cadott got its own, with a punt caught and flag called for the Hornets with 5:57 left in the third. The Hornets were then pushed out at the 35-yard line, while they took back over at the Oriole 42-yard line after the punt, still in the 3rd quarter.

Making another touchdown and follow up in the fourth quarter, the Hornets brought the game to 16-0, the extra point being good.

Things were looking bad, with Mahr and Logan Burzynski taking the ball for a drive but failing to get around the Hornet’s defense. Breaking free from an attempted tackle by the Hornets, Mahr ran into the end zone, making a touchdown and putting six points on to bring the score 16 – 6 for the game thus far. Seeking to maneuver in for a follow up, Burzynski took the ball to the 21-yard line for the Orioles, while a blocked pass in the end zone to Mahr prevented the Orioles from scoring towards the end.

With lightning flashing si lently in the distance as game play came to an end, the rain held ou overnight, with Stan ley making a postgame huddle on the south end of the field, while Cadott took to the north. With the next varsity football game Friday against Marathon away, the Orioles will have a chance to fix mis takes and play another game.
